When you think of a village, the only thing that strikes in someone’s mind is calmness, fresh air, relaxation, but what if the village turns into a village of ghosts and every other person living in the village leaves and vanishes somewhere? It’s scary. Somewhat like this is the story of Kuldhara Village, a cursed and abandoned ghost town of Jaisalmer district in Rajasthan.
The story of Kuldhara village revolves around rich Paliwal Brahmins, but it’s been many years still no one knows where these people vanished. About 200 years ago, there was a powerful minister Salim Singh, known for his outrageous behavior of tax collection. One day he decided to go on a stroll in Kuldhara Village, and he saw a girl who was the daughter of the village chief. He started liking that girl, he tried many ways to get that girl, but he was unsuccessful every time. Finally, he decided to want her, so he told the villagers and father of that girl that I am giving the time till the full moon, on the day of the full moon I want the girl in my Kingdom and also told villagers if anyone came in between then he would levy huge taxes on them.
Fearing Salim, villagers tried coming up with ideas. They first decided to tell the family to leave the village, but they knew that if Salim got to know this, he would not leave anyone; later, they decided to fight with the army, after realizing that their strength was too small in front of Salim’s army and they might lose the battle they dropped this idea too. Finally, after many discussions, they decided to leave the village overnight to protect their honor. Thousands of villagers took their essential things and silently left the village, but while leaving, they cursed, saying no one would ever be able to settle in this village again.
Another day when Salim saw that even after giving them the last chance, the girl didn’t come to his Kingdom, he took his army to attack the village, when he reached the village it was too silent, there was not even a single person around.
Later because the village was too developed, the soldiers decided to settle there, but they couldn’t because of the curse was given by villagers.
The curse appears to be so true that it’s been so many years, yet the land is barren, and no one ever tried settling in that village. The houses are in the same condition as they left. The history of Kuldhara Village is scary. Since then, it has been known as an abandoned village of Jaisalmer.
Kuldhara Village is now a heritage site maintained by the Archeological Department of India. Many tourists visit Kuldhara village to experience the vibes.
